Lake Zwenkau

Am southern outskirts of Leipzig, adjacent to the City of Zwenkau Lake Zwenkau is located. Until 1999, lignite was mined in the Zwenkau opencast mine. After the complete flooding, Lake Zwenkau, with an area of ​​almost 10 km², is the largest body of water in the southern Leipzig New Lake District.

This old map shows the then-existing village of Eythra, which, like the Harthwald forest shown here, had to make way for the Zwenkau open-cast mine. The Floßgraben and the Batschke stream were relocated to make way for the open-cast mine.

Around Lake Zwenkau

An approx. 22 km long circular route around the lake invites you to Exploring the countryside by bike or on foot In 2015, Lake Zwenkau reached its final water level. The first sailboats were able to dock in the harbor starting in May 2015.
