From mining to viticulture

In 2000, the Reifert family began planting vines on the slopes of Lake Geiseltal. At the time, they were still looked down upon, but today the vineyard represents the highest form of recultivation of former open-pit mining sites. It faces south and has a 30% slope, and the largest artificial lake in Central Germany reflects sunlight and protects the vines from frost in winter. 
The vineyard has therefore already attracted widespread media interest. The winegrowing family has been featured on the MDR programs "Unter Uns," "Mittagsmagazin," and MDR Spezial – Die Reportage "Kohle, Wasser, Wein - Der Weinzer von der Abraumhalde," among others. Winemaker Lars Reifert has also already received the Future Award for the most innovative vineyard from BASF and the Meininger publishing house in Neustadt an der Weinstraße.
Three centuries of mining have left a lasting mark on this region. Coal production provided jobs for many generations until the last coal train left the open-cast mine in 1993. Today, you can enjoy the wines from this exclusive location.
