With almost 18,4 km², the Geiseltalsee is the largest artificial lake in GermanyAfter operations at the Geiseltal open-cast mine ceased in 1993 and extensive excavation and remediation work was completed, the flooding of the lake began in 2003. The lake has been completely flooded since 2011.

Three observation towers with a height of 14 m each around the lake offer an overview of the dimensions of the Geiseltalsee. Geiseltal Express you can comfortably circumnavigate the lakeIf you like it more sporty, you can enjoy the beautiful, 28 km long asphalt circular route You can also walk around the lake, cycle or inline skate.
At the foot of the City of Mücheln is the maritime port facility Marina Mücheln, which is open to visitors daily. The Mücheln Marina houses the harbor information center, boat and bicycle rentals, the harbor office, the pier building with a beer garden, boat school, wellness center, a jetty for passenger ships, and moorings for your sailboats.
The Transition from mining to viticulture – at the Geiseltalsee is the first vineyard on an open-cast mining lake.
In the summer of 2012, the Geiseltalsee was partially opened.
